The Chai Lai Experience

The Chai Lai Experience is my way of sharing some of the places, people and moments that have become such an important part of my life in Northern Thailand.

Over two days, we travel from the forest temples and mountain communities surrounding Chiang Mai to the waterfalls, jungle and elephants of Chai Lai Orchid.

Day One

The day begins when I collect you from your accommodation in Chiang Mai. Our first stop is Wat Pha Lat, a beautiful and understated Lanna-style temple that is dear to my heart for its simplicity and unusual features.

We then continue to Chai Lai Orchid for a traditional Karen lunch before heading deeper into the mountains for the adventurous 4×4 journey to Wat Kun Win. The ride is all part of the experience, taking us high into the mountains to this incredible carved wooden temple — a true hidden gem, far from the tourist crowds of Chiang Mai.

Afterwards, we make our way back to Chai Lai, where you will spend the night at Daisy Photo Lodge.

Day Two

We begin at Daisy, where your elephant joins us for our early morning photography session and elephant breakfast.

From there, we move through a series of very different settings — a waterfall, the grass huts with a baby elephant and its family, a jungle walk with one of the larger elephants, and finally the river.

The experience ends at the river. Afterwards, transport will be arranged back to your accommodation at a time that suits you.

There is plenty to photograph, but this experience has never been only about photographs.

It is about spending two days discovering the people, landscapes and elephants that have made Chai Lai such an important part of my own life.
